Annual Birthday Trip to Vermont

This year we did for my birthday what we always do: took a day trip to Vermont for apple picking and a visit to Simon Pearce!

The foliage was gorgeous. Our trip was in early October so it was peak season and man, it did not disappoint!

We hit the road super early and made the two hour drive north to Wellwood Orchard in Springfield, VT.

Wellwood Orchard is awesome because they have the best apple selection, pumpkins, a market full of fall favorites, a petting zoo, and cider donuts!

I also think they have the best scenery too. The orchards in Mass. are way too crowded and can’t compare, in my opinion. Isn’t this beautiful?

Apple picking was super fun. You ride a tractor up to the orchard and have your pick of about 10 varieties of apples. John is a lover of Macouns so we got an entire 1/2 bushel of them!

When we were done apple picking, we shopped around in the market and picked up some pumpkins, gourds, and cider donuts. Last, but not least, we had to visit the animals in the petting zoo! You pay 50 cents to enter and get to hang out in a huge menagerie of animals – cows, goats, sheep, rabbits, birds, chickens, and even peacocks! The animals are very people friendly, we love them!

After we were done at Wellwood, we drove another 40 minutes north to the Simon Pearce workshop and restaurant in Quechee, VT.

While we waited for our table at the restaurant, we checked out the glass blowing studio on the lower level.

It’s always such a treat to see the glassmiths in action – the glass they are working with is over 1,600 degrees! They are incredibly deft and watching them mold and blow the glass is like watching a complicated dance. I could stand there mesmerized for hours. They are exceptional craftsmen.

Finally, it was time for lunch! We headed up to the dining room and checked out the specials. They sounded good to us so we ordered one of everything! (Vermont cheddar soup, butternut squash bisque, two pulled pork quesadillas, and a carrot cake whoopie pie)

Before we left, we took one more walk around the complex and the mill. The waterfall and covered bridge in the back is so lovely, it might be my favorite part of the whole place.

Another birthday Vermont road trip in the books! It was just as fun and happy as each year before. There is no other place I’d rather be for my birthday. I love this tradition and can’t wait until next year!
